I’m a secondary English teacher with a lifelong fascination for the nineteenth century — not as a museum piece, but as the moment where so many of our current fault lines first took shape. My graduate work (ABD, Ph.D., English, University of Nebraska-Lincoln) focused on nineteenth-century interdisciplinary studies: the places where literature, art, science, and history weren’t separate subjects at all, but conversations happening in the same room. Darwin was writing alongside the Pre-Raphaelites. Industrial upheaval was reshaping both landscapes and novels. The century’s great arguments — about progress, identity, and who gets to be heard — are still the arguments we’re having today, just wearing different clothes.
That conviction shapes everything I teach. Whether it’s grammar, composition, American or British literature, creative writing, or public speaking, I want students to see the threads connecting a poem to a painting to a scientific discovery to a headline — and to recognize that the “discontents” of the 1800s planted seeds we’re still living with. I hold an MA in English (creative writing), a B.S. in Speech Education, and a B.A. in English, and I’ve spent my career teaching grades 7 through college-level dual-credit courses across Nebraska, New Hampshire, and Wyoming.
